Password Skills Preparation

Role: Sole Developer

Development of a preparation course for students taking Password Skills, an English Language Test to assess a student's CEFR levels of English from A2 to C1. The course was designed to aclimatise students to the task types used in the exam. Exercises were designed to mimic their performance in the computer-based exam, while giving students tips to performing to their best ability.

ELSA Online

Role: Senior Lecturer

English Language Support and Access (ELSA) was a system designed to assess the English language support needs of arriving international students. The assessment could be taken wherever and whenever, was adaptive to the student's performance, and directed students to resources that it was felt they needed.

The background of the test ran a video tour of the central campus of the university, which stopped as soon as students started the test, allowing students, who were facing 2 weeks of isolation affer arriving in the UK, a chance to aclimatise themselves.

A teacher portal also allowed for fast annonymised marking for written work, and assessment of any new unique answers to any gap-fill questions. There was also access to live performance data, item analysis and material review.

WEPE Online Exam

Role: Senior Lecturer

Designed to assess the English entry requirements of international students during Covid, the system was so successful that it replaced face-to-face testing completely. The online Wolverhampton English Proficiency Exam (WEPE), was audited by UKVI and they found no areas that gave them any concern about the security and validity of results.

Online security is a critical area of development for the future of Education, and the challenges we face will only increase.

An innovative Canvas LMS course for OET Nurses. With material developed by the International Academy at Wolverhampton University, the course framework and interactive content were designed and developed with a focus on ease of use and accessibility. Adaptive design was used to ensure content worked on laptops or mobile devices equally well.

A resource for the online collaborative training of oncologists and radiologists. Working with CT and MRI scans, doctors can contour regions of interest and then compare their own results with those of colleagues. Trainers can also use the tool in face-to-face or online workshops, annotating key features and pointing out areas to focus on without revealing to all which contours are whose.

Some of the most challenging maths and logic were required to develop this software and by far the steepest learning curve I have had.

We developed a SCORM-based compliance test for Barclays front-line and complaints handler staff. Assessment, testing and teaching modules were produced to allow for efficient and timely compliance testing using the bank's current Learning Management System.

CCMO Question Bank

The CCMO Question Bank is a bespoke online learning resource with content based on the specialist training curriculum of the Royal College of Radiologists. It forms part of an distance learning programme developed by members of Cambridge University Hospitals Cancer Division to meet the changing training needs of oncology trainees in the UK.

WORDREADY Academic

Winner of the 2012 ELTon Award for Digital Innovation, WORDREADY Academic English is a powerful online vocabulary learning resource. It is aimed at students preparing to study or already studying at an English speaking university or college.

Designed and developed to run from standard dictionary entry content and to build exercises on the fly, students are able to cut and paste articles of their choice into the software and exercises will be delivered based on vocabulary in the articles. The software also managed spcaed repitition of the vocabulary items to ensure retention. This was used by over a quater-of-a-million students preparing for the IELTS exam.

As part of an EU Leonardo Project, jonMoat produced English and Spanish DVD-ROMs for real estate agents. We were also involved with content creation and produced the textbook for the taught element of the course.

WORDREADY Young Learners

Shortlisted for the 2006 ELTon Awards, WORDREADY Young learner English is a subscription service for 7 to 12 year-olds learning English vocabulary. WORDREADY presents, practises and revises vocabulary over a period of time, and adapts to each individual learner's performance.

Exercises were generated on demand from an online database of vocabulary item data. The software was supported in 16 different languages to allow easier access to young learners and their guardians, who may not speak any English.

MEd Technology Enhanced Learning - Improving Pronunciation in English Language Learners through the use of Automatic Speech Recognition Software and Automated Feedback.

University of Stirling 2005

IELTS Preparation

Separate discs were developed for the IELTS Academic and General training exams. Each disc contains topic-based graded practice for learners, exam techniques and tips, introduction to and practice of all exam exercise types and coverage of all four skills papers (reading, listening, writing & speaking). The video disc features four professionally-filmed full-length high-definition exam-style interviews with real IELTS students and experienced examiners.

Young Learner

Role: Project Co-ordinator

Complementary discs were developed for use with young learners in British Council classrooms and self-access centres worldwide. Each disc contains a mixture of motivational interactive activities and fun games based on 9 topic areas. Learners are supported in their learning by a friendly alien called Kodi, who provides instructions, hints and feedback using both speech and fun animations. Using voice-recognition, students were able to interact with the material without using a keyboard, making it more accessible and user-friendly.

Ericsson's English Test

An existing placement test was converted to an electronic medium. Elements of interest were the animated demonstrations, the time-locked tests, automated marking and storage of learner results on a central networked computer, which also allowed for statistical analysis of all answers. The first bilingual software, with all instructions delivered in both Russian and English.

An innovative mixture of blue-screen video and 3D environments, this engaging five-level series of multimedia materials is designed to provide supplementary practice for adult EFL students in British Council teaching centres worldwide.

Each disc is made up of four sections Words, Grammar, Skills and Stories. The Words and Grammar sections contain a variety of exercises utilising text, audio and illustrations. In Skills and Stories, exercises are designed to give learners authentic practice in virtual UK locations.
